Just be careful not to overdo it. I remember another combat/trading game many years ago in which the market reacted to your purchases. You needed to do a bit of work to start with, but once you could afford a few tons of silver, you were made. You bought the silver and the price went down, you sold it again and the price went up, you repeated until you could buy all the silver in stock. Then you went somewhere else, dumped the lot, watched the price plummet, and bought back all your silver plus what was in stock there. At this point you could just stay there and keep buying and selling until you had enough money to buy all the equipment you could possibly want.
the game you are thinking of is Sid miers(sp?) pirates i think. -

as a general rule all patches and builds require a new game,wich can make testing for potc fun at times,least at one point

it's a decent game,but i got unlucky,killed one brig but another killed me in 2 shots
may try again but i lack skill in a major way when it comes to games

one on now is dads,bout 5 years old,still stock on the tower side,has a 3 year old monitor and newish keyboard and mouse integrated Intel chipset so can't play potc or aop 1 or 2 well 1 plays but it's so laggy i don't bother to play it.has a Intel Pentium 4 processor 3.0 MHz 254 mbs of ram and 119 gbs hard drive.
